AGE RELATED SPINE SYNDROMES Bone Spurs Bone spurs are defined as small projections of bone that grow from the existing skeletal structure. The precise cause of bone spurs is unknown, but they arise frequently from osteoarthritis and may also develop as a result of general aging. Bone spurs are a common development in the human body and are not always problematic. |

Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD) Degenerative changes in the spine are often referred to those that cause the loss of normal structure and/or function. The intervertebral disc is one structure prone to the degenerative changes associated with wear and tear aging, even misuse (e.g. smoking). Neuropathy Neuropathy refers to the conditions that result when nerves that connect to the brain and spinal cord from the rest of the body are damaged or diseased. Symptoms vary according to the type and may include sensory symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and pain in the feet and hands; or motor symptoms such as weakness and loss of muscle bulk, particularly in the lower leg and feet muscles. Osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis, also called degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis. It is associated with a breakdown of cartilage in joints and can occur in almost any joint in the body. It most commonly occurs in the weight bearing joints of the hips, knees, and spine. Radiculopathy This term refers to pain in the extremities and can be caused by compression of the roots of the spinal nerves in the cervical or lumbar region of the spine. Sacroiliitis Sacroiliitis is an inflammation of your sacroiliac joint. That's the joint where your hip meets the spine. Inflammation can be caused by trauma or arthritis. Spondylosis Spondylolisthesis is a condition that occurs when one vertebra slips forward over another vertebra. Spinal Stenosis Is the narrowing of the spinal canal which places pressure on the nerve roots or the spinal cord. The most common cause is the aging process though it may be caused by herniated discs, bone and joint enlargement, spondylolisthesis, and bone spurs. Spinal Fusion Spinal fusion (arthrodesis) is a surgical procedure that joins, or fuses, two or more vertebrae.
